Our final port of call after a day at sea was Naples, Italy.  We awoke in port and, on this day, we were all pretty tired.  We didn't have an excursion planned (which was a good choice) and we decided to join with our friends from Scotland / Finland, Ian and his son (Connor's buddy), Andrej.  We simply walked into town to explore the medieval Castel Nuovo and have lunch.  The castle was first built in 1279 and is very imposing.  Its history includes housing Pope Celestine V.  Now, of course, it's a museum.

After the museum, we walked a bit and found an outdoor pizzarea.  Pizza has history dating back to the 16th century, supposedly in Naples; it was known as the food of poor people.  It was a simple flat bread with basic ingredients, including oil, cheese, and tomatos.  Supposedly, the king refused to eat it.  (Boy, was he missing out!)  It wasn't until visitors sought the dish out in "poorer" neighborhoods that it eventually caught on.  Neapolitan pizza is smaller, more like a "personal pizza" size, about 12 inches in diameter.  We ordered a "meat" pizza and classic pizza margherita.  With drinks and sharing a couple of larger pizzas, our total lunch bill came to €12, probably the cheapest and one of the most delicious lunches we had the entire trip!

As we left, we caught a fabulous view of Mt. Vesuvius, the only active volcano in mainland Europe.

At the end of the day, we SLOWLY packed our bags (oh, how I resisted!), said our good byes, and got ready to make our way to Fiumicino airport and back to the United States.  It was without question a vacation of a lifetime and 17 days of wonder, exploration, and pure joy.  We are so blessed and truly grateful to have had such an amazing experience.  These are the experiences, the education, and the fun we always hoped to share with Connor.  I know seeing the world at this formative age will shape him as the man he will later become.  We're already dreaming and planning the next adventure to come . . . Ciao for now!
